    College application deadlines are near. What you need to know

    College applications are open for the fall 2025 term, and deadlines are looming. 

    California’s two public university systems — the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) — provide the state’s students with 32 campuses to choose from. 

    That’s on top of more than a hundred community colleges that can provide pathways to transfer to other campuses and associate degrees. Some also offer bachelor’s degrees

    Here are the basics of how and when to apply. 

    When are college applications due? 

    It depends on the college or university. The UC and CSU deadline for fall 2025 admissions to all undergraduate campuses is Dec. 2, 2024. 

    Community college admissions do not have a specific deadline, but it’s generally better to apply early. Private colleges and universities have their own deadlines, with most in mid-January. 

    Who is eligible to apply for California colleges?

    To apply to the UC system, students who are residents are required to earn at least a C in the following so-called A-G requirements  — and maintain a GPA in those courses above 3.0 during their sophomore and junior years. 

    • Four English classes
    • Three math classes, though four are recommended
    • Two science classes, though three are recommended
    • Two history classes
    • Two courses in a world language, though three are recommended
    • One class in the visual or performing arts
    • One college preparatory elective class 

    Eligibility for California residents to apply to CSU is similar with respect to the A-G requirements, and applicants must have a GPA above 2.50. Students who do not meet the GPA threshold but have higher than a 2.0 could still be considered for admission with other supplemental factors taken into account.

    Those supplemental factors can range from a GPA specific to math and science to household income to extracurricular activities.

    Standardized tests are not required for the UC or CSU systems. 

    How many applications do you need to complete? 

    That depends on the colleges or universities a student is applying to — and whether they’re public or private. 

    There is a single application for all UC campuses and another for all CSU campuses, so there is no need to apply to each university separately. 

    Many private colleges and universities, however, rely on the Common Application, which has its own universal essay prompts and allows campuses to customize additional requirements, including essays, short-answer questions and letters of recommendation. 

    What does the application involve?

    In addition to students’ grades, the UC application also requires students to respond to four personal insight questions — or short essays under 350 words. There are eight prompts to pick from. The UC also has applicants expand on their experiences in high school, including a list of extracurricular activities and achievements. 

    The Cal State application is far simpler, and the main factor considered in the admissions process is a student’s grades in college preparatory classes taken after ninth grade. 

    Generally, the CSU system does not require writing essays. 

    For private campuses, essays are often required, along with letters of recommendation. 

    Are early action and early decision good options? 

    Early action and early decision give students the opportunity to apply to a college or university early — and also receive their decisions months early. 

    They are more common options at private colleges and universities — and can be good options if your child is ahead of the game, ready to click “submit” and wants to express a special interest in the campus. 

    Here’s the main downside of applying early decision: If your child is accepted, they will have to commit to that university and turn down any other offers of admission. 

    Early action, on the other hand, is generally not binding. So, they can be accepted early and still decide to attend another university. 

    How much does it cost to apply to colleges? 

    There is a single application for the UC system, and it costs $80 for every campus selected. Meanwhile, the CSU system charges $70 per campus, and community college applications are free for U.S. residents. 

    Private campuses vary — but often charge between $50 and $100. 

    What if you can’t afford the application fees? 

    The UC system will waive the application fee for up to four campuses in cases where students wouldn’t be able to apply without financial assistance. 

    Fees can be waived for students who are eligible for AB540 benefits and for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. 

    The application itself will notify students if they are eligible once they add their family’s income and size in the  “About you” section.

    The CSU system also affords students application fee waivers; and, students automatically find out if they’re eligible once they complete the application. 

    Eligibility for CSU waivers involves the same criteria as the UC system — but students also have to have been a California resident for at least one year. 

    Like the UC system, the CSU waiver can apply to a maximum of four campuses. 

    Several private colleges and universities also provide fee waivers for students who need it. 

    How do you apply for financial aid?

    For federal assistance with financial aid, it’s important to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. In California, students should aim to submit the form — which was revamped last year to make it more straightforward — by March 2025.

    The California Dream Act was also updated earlier this year and expanded to also serve students who are U.S. citizens but who have a parent without a Social Security number. 

    When should you expect to hear back from universities?

    Students usually hear back from colleges they’ve applied to in March — unless they apply for early action or early decision.

    West Contra Costa Unified denies charter renewal application

    For the first time in five years, the West Contra Costa school district board of trustees has denied a renewal petition of one of its charter schools.

    By a unanimous vote on Wednesday, the board rejected the renewal application of the Richmond Charter Academy, which serves just under 300 students.

    It is part of Amethod Public Schools, or AMPS, a charter management organization that also operates two other charter schools in Richmond and three in Oakland. 

    The vote followed impassioned appeals by staff and students wearing yellow T-shirts, trying to persuade the board to allow the school to continue operating. 

    A similar hearing about the school’s fate was held at a board meeting last month.  There are 13 charter schools in the district, serving close to 4,000 students of the district’s nearly 30,000 students. 

    The charter schools are among more than 1,300 in California, by far the largest number in any state. 

    Renewal petitions are rarely denied in California.  The Legislature approved a law (Assembly Bill 1505) in 2019 governing charter school applications and renewals, but its full implementation was delayed until after the pandemic. As a result, many charters are just now coming up for renewal under the 2019 law. 

    The board’s decision was not entirely unexpected. It was based on a strong recommendation by district staff, outlined in a detailed 79-page report that the district deny the school’s charter based on concerns about its finances and its ability to guarantee that it could offer the educational programs it was promising. 

    The staff reviewers said they “found fiscal concerns that could not be remedied and the school would not likely implement the program as described in the petition.” 

    The denial came despite students showing academic results somewhat higher than the district average. 

    Beyond fiscal worries, several board members also expressed concern about the small number of Black students in the school. 

    The school has a 91% enrollment of Latino students, while Black students only make up 4%.  That’s in a district with an 11.5% Black enrollment.  

    School administrators said the school admitted students based on a lottery, and thus, the racial or ethnic makeup of the school was determined by who applied.

    The school now has a chance to appeal the denial to the county school board, and if the renewal is denied there, the school could then appeal to the State Board of Education. 

    Among the issues identified in the staff report was the very low number of teachers with a “clear” teaching credential. 

    Another concern was the considerable turnover in leadership. Some board members had high praise for the current interim CEO, Adrienne Barnes. But in light of leadership turnover in the past few years, they said they weren’t confident that the current leadership would stay much longer.  

    “Ms. Barnes, you have made a Herculean leap forward, and I appreciate your efforts,” board President Leslie Reckler told her at the meeting. “But I have deep concerns over whether you’re going to be here in a year, or even less than that.” 

    In 2020, the board voted not to renew the application of the Manzanita Elementary charter school, despite a staff recommendation that the application be approved. The school then appealed to the Alameda County Board of Education, which overruled the district board. Manzanita is still operating today.  

    None of the current district board members were on the board in 2020. Reckler and Demetrio Gonzalez-Hoy, the two most senior current members, pointed out that this was the first time they had voted against a charter renewal, and that it was a difficult vote to cast. 

    “As the people in charge of renewing the charter, I simply cannot do that,” Gonzalez-Hoy said. “I am sorry for that because I know how painful this is. And as the first charter that I have to deny, I feel the pain.”

    “The staff’s findings raise serious questions that we cannot ignore, and it would be irresponsible to move forward without addressing them fully,” added board member Guadalupe Enllana in explaining her vote. “My decision is not made lightly, but it’s made with students at the center because that is who we are here to serve.”

    Application Window Open for The Teach Like a Champion Fellows–Cohort 4!!


     

    Since 2016, one of our most exciting projects here at Team TLAC has been our Teaching Fellowship, which has allowed us to learn from champion teachers and share their expertise through our workshops and materials with schools all over the world. We are excited to announce that we are opening applications for our fourth cohort of TLAC Fellows!  

    The goal of our Fellows program has always been to recognize, support, and develop outstanding classroom teachers. In our initial launch of the program, we described the purpose like this:  

     

    We want to create incentives for great teachers to become even better teachers. That is, we want ways for them to be ambitious and remain in the classroom, to be ambitious about being a classroom teacher, rather than having entering administration be the only way to be ambitious. 

     

    And we want to encourage very, very good teachers to focus on getting even better- to strive to become classroom artisans who love and are fascinated by the mastery of the craft. We want them to love deep study of teaching and importantly, to influence their peers though the excellence of their daily teaching and their passion for the craft- their growth mindset, if you will. We think great schools need people like that. And being who we are of course we also want to learn not just from but with people like that- study them and their work but also study the craft generally alongside them. 

     

    The time is right for a program like this one. Since 2020, teachers have been required to adapt to a constantly changing educational landscape, and students have returned to school with increasingly urgent learning needs. Across the country and around the world, schools are struggling to attract and keep top teachers in classrooms. This is our opportunity to honor the incredibly hard and important work teachers are doing. 

     

    Of course, our team benefits tremendously from the Fellows program. Not only have we been inspired and energized by the work that our Fellows have done in their schools, but we’ve gained invaluable video and reflections about the nuances of various TLAC techniques. Many of our former Fellows are featured in TLAC 3.0, including in our new Keystone videos (extended videos, 10 minutes or so, intended to show a longer arc of a teacher’s lesson where they use multiple techniques in combination). We still have strong relationships with former Fellows who continue to contribute to our team and help us learn. Over the next few months on the blog, we’ll be shining a spotlight on Fellows from our recently concluded third cohort to share some of the work and learning they’ve done during their time in the program (see the end of this blog post for their names and independent study areas). 

     

    If you are a teacher who is looking to be valued and celebrated for your work while being pushed to grow in your own practice to become even better for your students and colleagues, we invite you to apply and learn alongside us!  

     

    Cohort 4 Details:  

    • The program will run from January 2026-January 2028, for which Fellows must remain in the classroom. 
    • The first 18 months will involve active programming (bi-monthly remote and some in-person meetings with the team, classroom filming, video analysis, etc.) and the final 6 months will be an independent project. 
    • A $10,000 stipend (paid over the course of two years, provided that Fellows remain in the classroom and complete the independent project)
